Vol. 225 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Car-Ferry Service.

11.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the total number of cars which entered the State through the Dún Laoghaire car-ferry terminal during the 1966 tourist season; and what increases his Department forecast for the future.

The total number of cars which entered the State through the Dún Laoghaire car-ferry terminal up to 15th October, 1966 was 16,300. It was intended that the service would commence on the 20th May, 1966 but due to the British seamen's strike, it did not commence until 3rd July, 1966.

I understand that increased sailings on this route next year will provide capacity for over 35,000 cars inward. Further substantial increases are dependent on the introduction of additional capacity.

(Cavan): Could the Minister say how many of those cars were foreign registered and how many Irish registered?

I am not sure; I have not got particulars of that. I only have cars inwards and outwards. I would say the traffic was, by a very gross margin, inwards.
