Vol. 225 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Agricultural Labourers.

6.

asked the Taoiseach the average weekly wage of agricultural labourers at the latest date for which these figures are available.

The average minimum weekly rate of wages of permanent male agricultural labourers, 20 years of age and over, computed on the basis of the Agricultural Wages (Minimum Rates) Orders, 1953-1966, is 180s 6d as from 1st October, 1966.

It is £8 a week.

The Parliamentary Secretary's information is not correct because the rates vary.

Specified rates are prescribed for different areas and the average weekly wage is struck on those rates.

The information given by the Parliamentary Secretary is not correct.

Are the Parliamentary Secretary and the Government satisfied this is sufficient for people to live on?

That is a separate question.

I am satisfied the information I gave is correct.

The Parliamentary Secretary is hedging over the answer. We will take it up again.
