Vol. 225 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Pork.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if in view of the expected shortage of gammons and hams during the Christmas period he will take steps to curtail the export of pork.

I am advised by the Pigs and Bacon Commission that the stocks of hams and gammons held by bacon curers are only slightly less than stocks at this time last year.

The quantities of pork being exported are very small at present, and exports are being so regulated by the Pigs and Bacon Commission as to ensure that our bacon quota for the British market is met and also that reasonable supplies of bacon and hams are available to meet home market requirements.

Is it not now clear to the Minister that because stocks are less, it means that pig production has fallen? Is that not the position?

If fewer pigs are sent to the factories, the Deputy may draw his own conclusions.
