Vol. 225 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Italian Trade Mission.

8.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether his Department had any discussions on cattle exports with the members of the Italian trade mission which recently visited this country; and, if so, if he will give details.

Officers of my Department had discussions with the Italian Trade Mission about the prospects for exports of slaughter cattle and feeder cattle to Italy. Because of the EEC levy on imports of slaughter cattle into Italy, trade in such animals is not regarded as economic at present. The possibility of exporting young feeder cattle to Italy, on which levy is not payable up to certain weights, is being further examined by exporters here and by Italian importers.
