Vol. 225 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Listing of National Monuments.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if Bord Fáilte have yet produced a brochure with a full list of sites of monuments and buildings of archaeological interest throughout the State.

Bord Fáilte published in 1964 a guide entitled "The National Monuments of Ireland", the text of which was prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works, listing and describing all the monuments then under the care of the Commissioners. The guide, which was designed chiefly for tourists, gives particulars of the most important monuments and buildings of archaeological interest in the country. It is obtainable from booksellers or direct from Bord Fáilte (Price 7/6d.)

Are all the monuments listed?

Is the Minister for External Affairs?

This guide did not list the monuments not under the care of the Commissioners of Public Works?

Therefore it does not list all the monuments?

No; it would take an enormous volume to list all the monuments. There are about 50,000 more sites in the country that could be, at a stretch, described as monuments. A volume of that nature would be far too big.

You would need a kind of Who's Who.

Could you not list monuments that Bord Fáilte themselves are aware of? The Board of Works have not a total collection of monuments. Why could we not have that instead of having the monuments the Board of Works have taken over? They have taken over only a small percentage.

The Irish nation has taken over a great number.

Question No. 3 postponed.
