(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Health the number of hospital, including nursing home, beds per thousand of population in this country, England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and various European countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Beds.
Thar cheann an Aire. As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
The following table is based on statistics given in the World Health Statistics Annual for 1962 (Vol. III) published by the World Health Organisation in 1966. Certain categories of institutions are not included in these figures. They are preventoria, children's homes, convalescent and rest homes, institutions for mentally handicapped persons and homes for old and infirm persons.
The publication from which the information has been abstracted states that under present conditions it is impossible to present, at the world level, tables which give both complete and rigorously accurate data.
