Vol. 226 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of American Angus Bulls.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether it is intended to import American Angus bulls; the number to be imported; their estimated cost; and if he will give the reason for the decision to import these bulls.

As announced by my Department on 29th November, three officers of the Department are in the United States investigating the possibility of purchasing Aberdeen Angus stock, both on behalf of the Department and of private breeders, including one AI station. It is proposed to import, in all, five bulls and up to 20 females. It is not yet possible to say what the cost might be.

The reason for the importation is that the popularity of the breed here has been declining, due to a loss of size and substance. It is hoped that the introduction of selected American strains will materially assist our efforts to restore the breed, particularly in the west of Ireland, where these cattle have been traditionally popular.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any idea of what the approximate price may be?

I am not in a position at the moment to say what the approximate price will be. This question is being investigated by the experts in my Department, and when the information is available, I will let the Deputy know.
