Vol. 226 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jury Service.

14.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that a large number of farmers, workers and business people are frequently summoned on juries and sometimes compelled to attend for several days under pain of heavy fines; that in rural areas it is practically impossible for an ordinary working farmer to be absent from his home for such periods; and that this is a grave hardship as well for workers and businessmen who cannot afford to be absent from their work and business; and if he will endeavour to find some other method of dealing with these cases or at least see that such people are remunerated for their loss of time and service.

The question of liability and remuneration for jury service has been dealt with in the Second Interim Report submitted to me by the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure. The Committee have also submitted Interim Reports dealing with other aspects of juries.

As I have already indicated to the House on a number of occasions recently, I am at present considering this whole matter in the light of the Committee's recommendations and I hope to introduce amending legislation next year.
