Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Vehicles from Clear-Ways.

134.

asked the Minister for Justice the daily hours during which the motor lorry with crane is used to remove stationary vehicles from clear-ways.

The towing vehicle is used throughout the period during which the clear-way provisions are in operation, that is, between 8 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. on Monday to Friday inclusive.

Is the Minister aware that the vehicle in question has been seen returning to its depot as much as 20 minutes before the clear-way time expired.

I am glad that the Deputy brought this to my notice. It should not happen.

135.

asked the Minister for Justice the date of introduction of the clear-ways in Dublin; the number of vehicles since removed from the clear-ways by or on the instructions of the Garda; and the number of fines imposed and prosecutions pending in respect of breaches of the regulations.

The scheme began on 5th December, 1966. By 3rd February, 1967, a total of 220 vehicles had been removed from the clear-ways and 335 fine-on-the-spot notices had been affixed to vehicles on the clear-ways. In addition prosecutions are being taken against 14 persons for contraventions of the clear-way provisions.

Can the Minister say what is the amount of the fine? Is £1 the maximum?

I could not say. I do not think there is a maximum. I will inquire and let the Deputy know.

It is difficult to get copies of the regulations. I have been trying to get them for three weeks and have not been able to do so.

I will certainly get the regulations and inform the Deputy of the maximum fine.
