Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Lights.

76.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any requests have been received from residents for the erection of traffic lights at the junction of Seán Mac Dermott Street and Buckingham Street, Dublin; whether he is aware of several accidents at this junction; and whether he proposes to have traffic lights erected in view of the frequency of traffic and the danger to children from nearby flats.

The provision of traffic lights at any particular location is a matter for the road authority, acting with the consent of or at the request of the Garda Síochána. I understand that representations were received by Dublin Corporation for the provision of traffic lights at this junction and that a number of fatal accidents have occurred at this point. Further, I understand that it is proposed, as part of a traffic management scheme involving the route from Amiens Street to Clontarf, to create a one-way outgoing traffic diversion along Lower Buckingham Street and Killarney Street and to restrict right-hand turns at the Seán MacDermott Street/Buckingham Street junction. The Corporation and the Garda consider that these measures, which are designed to eliminate major traffic conflicts at the junction, would render the provision of traffic lights unnecessary.

I understand that it is hoped to have the scheme in operation in a few months time, and that the traffic position at the junction would be kept under review to determine whether any further modifications become desirable.
