Vol. 226 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grand Canal.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make a general statement on the present position on the future of the Grand Canal.

Under the provisions of the Transport Act, 1950, ownership of the Grand Canal system is vested in Córas Iompair Éireann. The canal is still being used for navigation and the Transport Act, 1958 provides that Córas Iompair Éireann may not close a canal to navigation until the expiration of three years from the date on which it was last used for navigation. Any change from this position would involve amending legislation and no such legislation is under consideration at present.
