Vol. 226 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Store Cattle Exports to Italy.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to a report regarding the condition and liveweight gain performance of Irish store cattle exported to Italy; and if in view of the importance of expanding export outlets he will comment on this report.

I have seen a press report in this matter and I have also had a report from a livestock and a veterinary officer of my Department who visited Italy towards the end of January and saw the cattle which had been purchased here, including those purchased by the particular importer referred to in the press report. The Departmental officers' report indicated that the Irish cattle generally were progressing satisfactorily. In the case of the particular lot referred to in the press report, the officers stated that the animals were not in bad condition in relation to the ration they were getting, that there was no evidence of external parasites but that there was some evidence of possible fluke infestation. The cattle in question were selected in this country by the Italian purchaser as the type which he considered commercially most suitable for his requirements. I understand that this particular importer, unlike other Italian importers, did not arrange to have the cattle treated for fluke. I should add that all future shipments of such cattle to Italy will be treated for fluke.

Can the Minister say if there are any arrangements for inspecting these cattle?

I understand there are, at the boat.

Did this take place on this occasion?

Is the Minister saying that the report was untrue when it was said that these cattle were infested with lice and probably other parasites?

According to the information I have, not only was the report untrue but it was mischievous in its origin and could not have been intended to do anything but damage our trade.

Was it denied by the Irish Embassy in Italy?

I could not say.

Does the Minister not think that the Minister for External Affairs would be better doing that than traipsing around minding other people's business? It would be better if he minded Ireland's business.
