Vol. 226 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sheep Subsidy Payments.

5.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of sheep on which subsidy was paid in (a) County Roscommon and (b) County Leitrim during the past year.

The sheep subsidy schemes were related to mountain wether lambs of the Blackface or Cheviot breeds and to Greyface and Half-bred hogget ewes. These schemes were introduced in accordance with recommendations made to my predecessor by an expert group on which An Foras Talúntais, UCD, the National Farmers Association, my Department and others were represented.

The animals to which subsidy applied are not raised in County Roscommon which generally is not a mountain sheep district with the result that subsidy was paid on only 19 sheep in that county. Subsidy was paid on 5,651 sheep in County Leitrim.
