Vol. 226 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registrar of Friendly Societies.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the hours during which the office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies is open to the public.

The office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies is open to the public from 9.15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and from 9.15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. to 5.15 p.m. on Friday.

Having regard to the inconvenience caused to the public by this office being closed, would it not be possible to stagger the hours of the staff of the office so as to enable it to be kept open during the whole of the working day?

I am not aware of the complaints about the inadequacy of these hours, nor have any representations been received about them. The average number of inspections in this office over the past six months was only about five per week and therefore it does not appear as though the public are being inconvenienced.

Are they not the normal hours for office workers in this city?

They are. The Deputy may have in mind other offices which are open during lunch hour.

I understand that some of the staff would like the hours to be staggered so as not to have to join long queues in restaurants for lunch.
