Vol. 226 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Exports to Britain.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of cattle exported to Britain (a) in 1931 and (b) in 1966.

Domestic exports of live cattle to Britain numbered 687,897 in 1931 and 427.563 in 1966. If, in addition, the equivalents— in live cattle—of carcase beef exports are taken into account, the totals for the two years become, approximately, 689,200 in 1931 and 819,540 in 1966.

I wonder has the Parliamentary Secretary answered that question on behalf of the Taoiseach with his tongue in his semi-principled cheek?

The figures are quite satisfactory, you know.

I am afraid the market "has gone and gone forever, thank God."

Only last week, Deputy Esmonde was asking why we were not exporting more cattle in the form of carcase beef.

We were always in favour of exports of carcase beef or live cattle anywhere we could.

In 1931, in terms of live cattle, we exported only 1,300 head as compared with 391,980 head in 1966.
