Vol. 227 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Water and Sewerage Schemes.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that, owing to the lowering of the levels of the river Moy by the Office of Public Works, water supplies have been cut off from many householders at Rinnaney, Foxford, County Mayo; and when Mayo County Council will provide a piped water supply for these people.

I am not aware of the matter complained of by the Deputy.

Contract documents for the proposed water supply extension to serve Rinnaney and Belgarriff are under consideration in my Department. I am not yet in a position to indicate when approval is likely to issue thereto.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for the provision of proposed water and sewerage facilities at Achill and Newport, County Mayo, because of the increasing number of tourists who visit these areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Stage 1 of the Achill Island regional water supply scheme is already in operation. Final contract documents for Stages 2 and 3 of the scheme have not as yet been submitted. Preliminary proposals for Stage 4 are at present under consideration. There are no proposals before my Department for a sewerage scheme for the area.

Newport has an existing water supply and I am informed by Mayo County Council that their consultant is at present engaged in revising contract documents for the proposed sewerage scheme.

Will the Minister take the necessary steps to see that this work is undertaken at the earliest possible date? Mayo County Council say that the delay is caused in the Minister's office and the Minister says the delay is caused in Mayo. Nobody knows where the matter stands.

When I get proposals from the county council, I will deal with them as expeditiously as possible.

That means when the money is available.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the up-to-date position regarding the proposed extensions of water and sewerage schemes to the Kilbride cottages and other tenants in the town of Swinford, County Mayo.

No firm proposals for a group water supply or sewerage scheme to serve Kilbridge cottages have been received in my Department nor have any technical proposals been submitted by Mayo County Council for an extension of the public water or sewerage systems to this area.
