Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Valuation Increases.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the growing uneasiness in County Donegal as the result of the number of poor law valuations which have been increased over the past few years; and if in view of the fact that Donegal has the second highest rate in the country and is one of the poorest counties he will consult the Commissioner of Valuation with a view to stopping further valuation increases pending the recovery of the country's economy.

In reply to the first part of the Deputy's question, I am not aware that the position is as represented. As regards the second part of the question, the position is that the Commissioner of Valuation does not initiate revision of valuations. The initiative lies with the local authorities. The Commissioner of Valuation must comply with the prescribed statutory procedure in any case referred to him by the local authorities. I cannot interfere with the statutory procedure relating to the revision of valuations.

Any person aggrieved by reason of an increase in valuation has the right of appeal, subject to compliance with the procedures and dates laid down in the Valuation Acts.
