Vol. 227 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Sewerage Scheme.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received a proposal from Meath County Council for the appointment of a consultant engineer to prepare a sewerage scheme for the Mornington area; and when it is proposed to sanction the proposal.

A proposal to appoint a consulting engineer to prepare a report on a sewerage scheme for Mornington was received in my Department on 8th instant and is at present under examination. I am not in a position to say when a decision on the proposal is likely to issue.

Could the Minister give any reason why a matter of this kind should take a long time to deal with?

It was only on 8th instant that there was a proposal even to appoint a consulting engineer, and it is necessary to have an engineer to design the scheme.

That is why we propose to appoint him.

That was only on 8th instant. He could not possibly have it designed in that time.

We are not asking that the Minister design the scheme for us. We are asking that the Minister give permission to Meath County Council to appoint a consultant to design the scheme. Surely the Minister can arrange to do that without making a song and dance about it and saying he is not in a position to tell us when it is likely to happen.

The question of appointing the consulting engineer will be dealt with as quickly as possible, but I am not in a position to say when the scheme will commence.

I asked about the appointment of a consultant. That is all we are interested in at the moment. It will be several months before the other matter arises.

That will be dealt with as speedily as possible.
