Vol. 227 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Lights and Pedestrian Crossings.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there have been numerous traffic accidents at the junction of Aughrim Street and North Circular Road, Dublin; and if he will take steps to have traffic lights erected at this dangerous crossing.

I understand that there has been a number of traffic accidents at this junction. The provision of traffic light signals is a matter for the local authority at the request, or with the consent, of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. In this particular case I understand that the Commissioner has submitted to Dublin Corporation a statutory request for the provision of an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing on the North Circular Road on the Phoenix Park side of its junction with Aughrim Street. I understand further that the Garda authorities consider that the amount of cross traffic using the junction at present is not sufficient to warrant the installation of traffic light signals. Work on the provision of the pedestrian crossing is to commence shortly.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the danger to children crossing the road to visit the shops at the top of Philipsburgh Avenue, Dublin; and if he will take steps to provide a pedestrian crossing in the vicinity of these shops.

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the end of Philipsburgh Avenue nearest to Griffith Avenue.

The provision of a pedestrian crossing is a matter for the local authority at the request, or with the consent, of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. I understand that no representations have been made either to Dublin Corporation or the Garda authorities as to the need for a pedestrian crossing at this location. I am having the Deputy's representations brought to the notice of both these bodies.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government the locations at which Dublin Corporation will provide during the coming financial year (a) pedestrian operated traffic lights and (b) uncontrolled pedestrian crossings.

As the reply is in the form of a rather lengthy statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

I understand that Dublin Corporation's programme for the provision of pedestrian operated signals and uncontrolled pedestrian crossings during the coming financial year is as follows:

(a) Locations of Pedestrian Operated Signals: Swords Road/Gaeltacht Park; Dorset Street Lower/Eccles Street; College Green/Grafton Street; Grafton Street/Nassau Street; Townsend Street/Prince's Street; Ormond Quay Lower/Metal Bridge; Wellington Quay/Metal Bridge; Lincoln Place/ Clare Street; Pembroke Street/Baggot Street Lower; Rathgar Road at Garda Station.

(b) Locations of Uncontrolled Pedestrian Crossings: Rathfarnham Road/Lower Dodder Road; North Circular Road/Blackhorse Avenue; Malahide Road, on city side of roundabout; Crumlin Road/Iveagh Gardens; Sarsfield Road/Landen Road; Ballyfermot Road Lower/Ballyfermot Parade; Ballyfermot Road Upper at passageway to cinema; Dolphin's Barn Street at new Coombe Hospital; Baldoyle Road/Strand Road; Church Street near Church of Holy Angels; Bolton Street, south of Technical Schools.

However, the corporation advise that the list may be subject to some change during the year in the light of changing traffic conditions.
