Vol. 227 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Post Office.

26.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to erect a post office in Donegal town; and what steps it is proposed to take in the meantime to remedy the unsatisfactory conditions in which the staff are required to work there.

It is not possible to say when a new post office can be provided for Donegal town. Several properties on offer have been considered but so far none has come under notice which fully satisfies requirements.

All possible efforts will continue to be made to remedy deficiencies which are recognised to exist in the present premises.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say what actual proposals his Department have to remedy the position? A general statement that all possible provisions are being made is not sufficient because nothing has been done and conditions are very unsatisfactory. Would the Parliamentary Secretary say what concrete proposals he has to remedy the position until it is possible to build the post office? There must be some proposals.

The object is to find a new one as soon as possible and in the meantime, my information is, the Office of Public Works have done a good deal to curtail the defects of this whole building and they are about to undertake some further restoration work.

I have not got the details.

Unless the Minister for Social Welfare was incorrectly reported in the local press, he made a completely different statement to a Fianna Fáil cumann a fortnight ago from that which the Parliamentary Secretary has just made. Are we now to take it that you have started your local election campaign? We heard the Minister for Industry and Commerce being heckled in Ballina on last Monday because——

(Interruptions.)

I should like to know if what the Parliamentary Secretary has told the House is correct or is the statement made by the Minister for Social Welfare correct?

The Minister should confine himself to housing.

They are both correct.
