Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Dublin Market Area.

65.

asked the Minister for Justice if, having regard to the high standard of property, and of business conducted in the Dublin south city market area and to the injurious effects of imposing excessive rents, evicting tenants or unnecessary demolishing or developing property in the area, he will take steps, including the introduction of legislation, if necessary, to prevent the disintegration of the area.

Without accepting all the implications in the Deputy's question I may say that, as a result of complaints from a number of leaseholders, including those in the Dublin south city market area, I established in January last year a Commission to inquire into the working of the law relating to landlord and tenant. I asked the Commission to furnish an interim report on the provisions relating to the renewal of business tenancies under Part III of the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1931, and on any other aspects of the law which the Commission thought should be given priority. I understand that the Association which represents the interests of tenants in the area in question has given evidence before the Commission.

I expect the Commission's interim report in the near future.

Will the Minister ensure, in view of the substantial interests involved in the south city market area, that whatever recommendations are made by the Commission are implemented immediately, having regard to the undesirability of any damage being done to the area in question?

The Deputy can be assured of that. I expect to have the report in the near future and to go ahead on the lines suggested.

It will be printed in Ireland, I hope.
