Vol. 227 No. 11

Written Answers. - Council of Europe General Policy.

102.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what is the attitude of the Government with regard to Recommendation No. 474 on the general policy of the Council of Europe, which was adopted by the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe on 25th January, 1967; and whether he will instruct the permanent Representative in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to vote in favour of the proposals contained in this Recommendation.

The Government are in broad sympathy with the objectives set forth in paragraph 5 (i) and (ii) of the Recommendation and are ready to engage in constructive co-operation with European non-member states in suitable technical conferences.

With regard to paragraph 5 (iii) and (iv) of the Recommendation, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe is conducting a comprehensive review of the information services of the organisation. The Government will decide their attitude on the basis of the report he will submit in due course.

103.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what is the attitude of the Government with regard to Resolution No. 332 on the general policy of the Council of Europe, which was adopted by the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe on 25th January, 1967; and what action the Government have taken, or contemplate taking on it.

This Resolution, as the Deputy is aware, calls for the enlargement of the European Economic Community and so far as Ireland is concerned the Government are taking all the steps open to them to promote their application for membership.
