Vol. 228 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether talks will take place with Mr. Wilson regarding Ireland's application for membership of the EEC before an announcement by Britain regarding her attitude to the EEC.

I have been in touch with Mr. Wilson and I hope to be able to announce the time of a meeting shortly.

Can the Taoiseach say whether this will be before Mr. Wilson makes his comprehensive statement on Britain's intentions?

I cannot give any further information to the Deputy at this stage. I am sorry.

It is possible that the Taoiseach would meet him before he makes this statement?

It is possible, but I am not certain.

May we assume that if the British Prime Minister is communicating the intention of the British Government to his fellow members in EFTA, there will be some communication on similar lines to the Irish Government, between his meeting with EFTA and any subsequent steps he may have in contemplation in regard to the EEC?

The British Prime Minister undertook to keep me fully informed and I have every confidence that that means I will be told at the appropriate occasion what the intention of the British Government is.
