Vol. 228 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiddy Island Project.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of the Whiddy Island project what orders have been placed by the responsible company for work which can be carried out by Irish manufacturers.

I am aware that the first main contract was awarded to a Swedish firm and that substantial subcontracting work has been placed in Ireland. I have arranged for the capacity of Irish firms to do certain types of work on this project to be brought to the notice of the firm sponsoring the project and of the main contractors, and I am aware that the Steel Adaptation Association have taken similar action. The contract will, of course, be spread over a considerable time and I know that certain Irish firms are still in negotiation with the main contractors with a view to further participation.
