Vol. 228 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Derelict Site.

9.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the disappointment felt by residents of Armstrong Street, Harold's Cross, Dublin at the delay in consenting to the proposed compulsory acquisition by Dublin Corporation of the derelict site at Wharton Terrace; and if he will now give his consent.

I expect to be in a position to complete consideration of the various objections lodged against this proposal in the near future and to make a determination in the matter.

The Minister will agree that the matter has now been before him for some 18 months. Is he aware that the site in question is an open site to which many children resort daily, that it is littered with bricks, stones and all kinds of tempting missiles, that roofs and windows in adjoining houses have been broken on several occasions, that several children have been injured on the site and that it is a constant source of danger to children and to the public in general? If he is aware of these things, will he ensure that a decision is taken immediately in relation to either acquisition of the site by Dublin Corporation or its immediate development by whoever the owners may be?

This decision will be taken as soon as possible. I have notified the people concerned that I propose to determine this matter shortly and before doing so, I invited the submission of any additional facts or observations they have to offer.

How many owners of the site are there now? There were originally, I think, four or five. I wonder how many are left.

I think there are three. There are three firms of solicitors involved in it.

Questions Nos. 10 and 11 postponed.
