Vol. 228 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Increase.

51.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that a person in Donegal (name supplied) has been refused the old age pension increase; and that this person is over 80 years of age, has no means and depends on the kindness of a neighbour for a home; and if in view of this he will have the case reviewed.

At the last investigation of his case, the pensioner was the owner of a farm of land and means were assessed accordingly. He did not therefore qualify for the increase of 5/- a week granted in November, 1966. to pensioners who had no means. He has notified the Department that he sold the land and his case is being re-investigated.

I understand the Minister has also received representations in this case. I dispute the fact with him that this man is the holder of a farm. I submit that he sold the farm, or the holding, for about £150 about ten years ago.

The Deputy is not asking a question; he is making a statement.

I am asking the Minister would he not consider that in view of the fact that he has been made aware of all the details of this case, one of which is that this man sold his smallholding for £150 ten years ago and that is the only means he has at the moment. He is living on charity from a neighbour——

Will the Deputy allow the answer?

All I do know is that in November last he was the registered owner in the Land Registry of a farm.

That may be so. Does the Minister not agree that this is a very uncommon occurence in Donegal, that in fact this is no proof of ownership? Would he not agree that this is a case he will have another look at?

That is the proof we accept.

But I have pointed out on a previous occasion that the Department was wrong, and the Department is again wrong.

Will the Deputy please resume his seat? He is deliberately obstructing the business of the House.

I plead with you, Sir. I have asked the Minister will he reconsider this case. I am trying to do what I was sent here to do.

The Deputy is deliberately obstructing the business of the House.

I do not wish to do that; I wish to ask the Minister if he will reconsider this case. I have proved the Minister wrong in another case and I submit that he can be wrong in this case.
