Vol. 228 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retired Dispensary Doctors.

82.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Health if dispensary doctors who have retired for more than six years in certain cases have their pensions substantially reduced under section 31 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1963; and if he will introduce the necessary legislation to amend the Act and to ensure that such doctors are not treated unjustly.

It is not true that district medical officers who have retired for more than six years have their pensions substantially reduced in certain cases under section 31 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1963. In fact, this provision was designed specifically to increase the normal pensions of those district medical officers who were compulsorily retired under the Health (Officers Age Limit) Declaration, 1960. The special supplement is payable for a period of six years after a doctor's retirement, and after that period he reverts to normal pension.

This special provision is generous, and I see no reason for contemplating any amendment.

The Dáil adjourned at 5.30 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 16th May, 1967.
