Vol. 228 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building of Abbey Theatre.

18.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance if he will give figures of the lowest tender as accepted for the building of the new Abbey Theatre; the present estimated cost of this project; and the estimated figure for engineer-architect services.

The lowest tender received for the building of the new Abbey Theatre was accepted at figure of £309,773, excluding professional fees which were then estimated at £38,700. The revised estimated cost, including professional fees, of the project is £650,000. This figure includes £94,400 in respect of the cost of the Peacock Theatre which did not form part of the original contract. Improvements in light control, sound insulation, ventilation, fire prevention, accommodation, stage arrangements, electrical and acoustical equipment and specialist building work, increases in the cost of wages and materials and structural alterations found necessary in the course of construction account for the remainder of the increase in costs over the original contract price.

Professional fees are estimated at £72,000.
