Vol. 228 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Garda Station.

17.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is intended to close the Garda station at Caherdaniel, County Kerry and to have the nearest Garda station nine miles away.

It is intended to close temporarily Caherdaniel Garda station, which is a one-man unit, pending the erection of a new station there.

This course has become necessary because the present station is beyond repair and because of failure to find suitable accommodation locally for a garda.

Caherdaniel, which has a population of 528, is peaceful and free from serious crime. The Commissioner is satisfied that, as a temporary arrangement, the area can be policed satisfactorily from Waterville. The population of the Waterville sub-district, including Caherdaniel, is 2,903, and the approved strength is one sergeant and four gardaí.

Is it supposed to be awaiting the erection of a new Garda barracks?

It is only a temporary arrangement.

Does the Minister take into consideration the tourism potential in this area?

I am taking into consideration what is put down in the question.
