Vol. 228 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Kerry Schools.

21.

asked the Minister for Education the nine national schools in County Kerry that he intends to close in 1967.

Mr. O'Malley

I presume the Deputy is referring to my reply to a previous question from him on 3rd May, 1967.

I wanted the names of the schools concerned.

Mr. O'Malley

Of what?

The names of the schools to be closed.

Mr. O'Malley

I had not finished the answer.

In that reply I pointed out that the stage reached in these cases was merely one where the closing of the schools in question would likely arise. The investigations being carried out will not for some considerable time reach a stage when it could be said with any degree of certainty that they will be closed. It would therefore be entirely premature to give at the present time the names of the schools which may be involved.

Naturally, the Minister must have in mind some of the schools about to be closed in a short time as rumour has it, in the different areas.

Mr. O'Malley

Rumours have what?

That some of the schools are to be closed. Naturally you must have them in your Department.

Mr. O'Malley

I have a lot of cases in County Kerry which are being investigated but, as I say, it would be premature and perhaps injudicious to give the names at this stage.

There are no by-elections down there now anyway.
