Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beef Prices.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will explain why beef prices are falling rapidly on the Irish market at the same time as prices are rising on the British market; and if he will outline the steps he is taking to rectify this situation.

A decline in fat cattle prices and in the weekly standard prices under the Fatstock Guarantee Scheme in Britain is a normal seasonal feature at this time of the year. The increase which took place last month in market prices for cattle in Britain resulted in support payments at a lower rate being made on carcase beef exports from here, but the selling prices of carcase beef generally on the British market did not share in the increase that took place in British cattle market prices.
