Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Cork Garda Stations.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the increase in malicious damage and house-breaking in the city of Cork, he will reconsider his decision to close the Garda stations at Barrack Street, Togher and Dunroche's Cross.

I have approved of a scheme submitted by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána for a reorganisation of the Garda districts in the division of Cork East which is designed to release extra men for outdoor duty, to afford a better deployment of Garda personnel, and to give an improved service to the public. The present stations at Barrack Street and Togher will be closed and the areas policed from other stations in the reorganised districts. The station at Dunroche's Cross will not be closed.

The figures of offences of malicious damage and housebreaking over the latest period of five years, for which statistics are available, do not show a significant increase.

I am satisfied that the implementation of the Commissioner's proposals will make for efficiency and economy in Garda administration.
