Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Co-educational System.

33.

asked the Minister for Education if it is proposed to have a co-educational post-primary system in certain areas, where there is at present only a single college or convent, when free education and free transport facilities are being fully utilised; and, if so, in what areas it is proposed to have such a co-educational system.

Mr. O'Malley

Decisions in relation to co-education are matters for the relevant school authorities in the first instance.

Circumstances have arisen in some areas where the maintaining of a viable school in a particular centre was possible only by having a mixed school. In such cases the authorities of the school decided to organise the school on that basis. The extent of the co-education involved varies with the circumstances of each case.
