Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Galway City.

37.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the expected redundancy of over 200 workers at Galway Textile Printers Ltd., the reduction in the number of workers at Potez Industries of Ireland Ltd., from 250 to 60, the reduction in the number of workers at Steinbock Ltd., and the short-time employment of 192 workers at Michael Anthony Ltd., he will say what plans are being made to provide alternative employment for workers in Galway city.

It is anticipated that considerable employment opportunities will be created by the establishment of the industrial estate at Galway. I understand that, as a result of the promotional work of the Industrial Development Authority, a number of industrialists have expressed interest in locating on the estate.

Will the Minister say when it is expected that this employment will be available?

I presume that industrialists who are interested will go through the usual procedure of having their project developed by the IDA and examined for grant purposes by An Foras Tionscal. It will take some time.

There will be a big gap, so to speak?

There is usually a gap.

There have been suggestions of redundancy here and I think the Minister in his reply accepts that there will be redundancy but he does not say what the prospects are for future increased employment here.

This is as far as the information goes. Industrialists are interested and these projects will be developed but they will not be there immediately.

They will not provide employment now for those who may be redundant or unemployed?

It is unlikely that they will be there immediately.
