Vol. 229 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Annual Leave of Mayo Road Workers.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the difficulty being experienced by the Mayo County Manager in granting three additional days annual leave with pay to county road workers, he will now take the necessary steps to ensure that these workers are afforded their just entitlements and are paid for the three traditional holidays, 1st November, 8th December and 6th January.

The grant of leave to local authority road workers is entirely a matter for the employing local authorities subject to the provisions of the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1961. I understand however that Mayo County Council have been considering the question of granting leave with pay for the three additional days referred to by the Deputy and that they hope to make a decision shortly.

Could the Minister say whether or not he has any objection to the local authority making such an arrangement?

No. The local authority applied for the Minister's sanction and they were informed the matter was one for themselves.

They can do it if they want to?
