Vol. 229 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scarcity of Memorial Parchments.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the great scarcity of memorial parchments and the consequential difficulty in registering deeds in the Registry of Deeds; and if he will have steps taken to meet the difficulty.

There have been periodic complaints of difficulty in obtaining memorial parchments for the registration of deeds in the Registry of Deeds. This may be due in some measure to the trade allowing stocks to run down in the expectation that the existing statutory requirement may be abolished soon.

My Department is at present preparing a comprehensive Registry of Deeds Bill which will amend and modernise the entire law on the subject. It is my intention under this Bill to abolish the requirement that memorials must be on parchment or vellum. It is hoped that the Bill will be ready for introduction next year.
