Vol. 230 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naas Road Traffic Signs.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to provide on the Naas Road, (a) traffic lights at the main crossings, (b) special signs to point out the various crossings, and (c) a more enlarged type of road sign than at present.

As I indicated in the statement issued by me on 19th October, 1967, regarding safety measures on the Naas Road, I am having studies made of these and other relevant matters.

(Cavan): Could the Minister say whether the speed limit which he recently announced in respect of this road is a permanent or a temporary measure, pending the result of the investigation which he is having made?

It is hard to say that anything is permanent. That is the decision I made and there is no decision yet to discontinue it at any particular time, though it can be taken as reasonably permanent, at any rate. I am not prepared to say that there may not be changes in the future.

(Cavan): Would the Minister reconsider the whole thing in the light of the investigation which we are awaiting?

The whole matter will be reconsidered.

Could the Minister say whether local authorities are prevented from using anything but standard signs, regardless of the danger at a particular point of the road?

The standard signs are laid down and those are the ones used. I am satisfied that they are adequate.

Would the Minister say whether underpasses or flyovers of a minor nature would be considered, and would he care to consider whether this would be the future policy of the Department in future provisions for the making of roads?

I would not think they are likely.

May we assume that the imposition of the speed limit on the Naas Road was a measure which would stand until the whole status of the road was considered in the light of the inquiry set up? If that is the question, would there be other questions?

There may or may not.

There may or may not in the light of other considerations.
