Vol. 230 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weedkiller Standards.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will make a statement on the lack of standards in the manufacture of weedkillers in this country, which has caused grave concern to thousands of farmers and cereal growers; and if he will see that, where standards are low, suitable action will be taken at once.

The question whether chemicals used in agriculture, including weedkillers, should be controlled and if so, in what way, has been under active consideration by my Department. The matter is a very complicated one and the report of an expert working party set up by FAO on official control of chemicals used in agriculture, which is expected shortly, is also being awaited.

I have no information to suggest that the standards of weedkillers generally in this country are low.
