Vol. 230 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Forestry.

30.

asked the Minister for Lands if financial provision will be made to ensure that the forestry development programme is allowed to go ahead on the basis originally planned, with particular reference to the acquisition of the necessary tracts of land in the Foxford area of County Mayo, so as to relieve the families of forestry workers from the impact of redundancy and the uncertainty of continuous unemployment.

Provision was included in the Forestry Estimate for 1967-68 for the planting of 25,000 acres. I stated when introducing the Estimate that the land reserve position might not make the attainment of this figure possible but I was determined to resolve the reserve position.

So far as the employment position in Foxford is concerned it is expected that the men laid off at the end of May, 1967, can be re-employed at least temporarily from the beginning of December next.
