Vol. 230 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Hospital Domestic Staff.

35.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will sanction the payment of service pay to the domestic staff employed in the Cork Military Hospital, having regard to the fact that the Minister for Health has already sanctioned the payment of service pay for a similar category of worker in the employment of Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Mayo Health Authorities.

In accordance with the usual procedure governing claims on behalf of industrial employees in the State Service, the claim for service pay has been referred to the inter-departmental wages advisory committee. A decision will be given on receipt of the committee's recommendation which is expected shortly.

Is the Minister aware that this claim is in existence for many months? Could he indicate what "shortly" means? Is it a matter of weeks?

I understand the matter is on the agenda for the committee tomorrow. I hope it will be reached by the committee and that a decision will be arrived at quickly.
