Vol. 230 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois-Offaly unemployed.

37.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of unemployed at present registered at the (a) Tullamore, (b) Birr, (c) Portarlington, and (d) Portlaoise employment exchanges.

The number of persons on the Live Register at the local offices mentioned, on 13th October, 1967, the latest date for which particulars are available, was as follows:—

Local Office

Total Live Register

Tullamore

288

Birr

298

Portarlington

120

Portlaoise

242

The Minister does agree that these are record unemployment figures; all of them must be breaking record unemployment figures in this area.

I have no figures to compare because——

——of the fact that a number of people have been added to the unemployment register this year by the action of the Minister for Social Welfare in suspending the Employment Period Orders.

And there were quite a number taken off; these are people who actually want work and cannot get it.

If I thought at any time I could convince the Deputy, I would write to him.

I would rather the Minister wrote to the unemployed and told them where they can get work.

It is no joking matter; I should like to be able to do that.
