Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amalgamation of Creameries.

27.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the concern expressed by some farming organisations in relation to the amalgamation of creameries; and if in the interest of dairy farmers he will make a statement on the matter.

Early in 1966 the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society published a plan which illustrated a possible form of re-organisation of the dairying industry. That plan has since been widely discussed and while some co-operative societies have been slow to accept the idea of rationalisation, and some of the proposed groupings of creameries in the plan have not met with the approval of all concerned, nevertheless it is, I think, now generally accepted that a carefully planned re-organisation is necessary in the interests of the industry. Following consideration of the matter by the National Agricultural Council and in order to accelerate progress, I have as already announced, recently made arrangements for the engagement of eminent consultants from outside the country to make a detailed study as to the type of re-organisation of the industry best calculated to meet the needs of the future. These consultants, who will work in close collaboration with representatives of the industry and my Department, expect to commence their study early in December and their report should be available in about six months time.
