Vol. 230 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Persons at Work.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of people at work in the State (a) in 1951 and (b) in 1966; and the reasons for the decline.

The total number of persons at work in the State in 1951 was 1,217,000 and the estimated number in 1966 was 1,066,000.

Preliminary estimates derived from the 1966 Census of Population indicate that over the period in question the number at work in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing fell by about 163,000 while in non-agricultural economic activities the number at work increased by about 12,000.

We may take it now that there are 151,000 fewer people at work than there were in that particular year, despite the promises of 100,000 new jobs. The former Taoiseach was only out 250,000 in his forecast. Wives, put your husbands to work.

I notice that all these questions appear on the eve of by-elections.

Who fixed the date of the by-elections?
