Vol. 230 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Board of Works Employees.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will introduce a PAYE scheme for the employees of the Office of Public Works at Dún Laoghaire.

When the PAYE scheme was under consideration in 1959, it was decided to exclude from it State employees and certain other groups from whose remuneration income tax was deductible under arrangements of long standing. I am not aware of any grounds for introducing legislation, which of course would have to be of general application, to alter those arrangements. If the Deputy will supply particulars of any cases of dissatisfaction which have come to his attention, I shall be glad to look into them.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that on the 17th July, 1967, the Irish Transport and General Workers Union served a claim for an improvement in the rates of pay and working conditions of its inspector and foreman members employed in the Office of Public Works, Inchicore, Dublin; and that the union has been denied a conference in this regard; and if he will take the necessary steps to ensure that in accordance with the practice of good industrial relations his Department will commence immediate discussions with the representatives of the union concerned.

I am aware of the request for a meeting by the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. The claim covered six items, and concessions in relation to two of these have already been made to the employees concerned. Examination of a third item has been completed and a decision on it is expected shortly. A meeting with the union will then be arranged at which all the items covered by the claim can be discussed.

Am I to take it a meeting will be arranged soon?
