Vol. 230 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Ground Rents.

47.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of a large number of anomalies in the Landlord and Tenant (Ground Rents) Act, 1967; and that it does not afford any relief in the case of the majority of ground rents in Cobh, Midleton and other towns in County Cork; and if it is his intention to introduce a further Bill to cover these cases in the present session.

I do not accept that there are a large number of anomalies in the Ground Rents Act. This Act gave effect to the recommendation of the Ground Rents Commission that the right to purchase should be given to building and proprietary lessees, and extended that right to certain other lessees and yearly tenants. While the Bill was before this House on Committee Stage representations were made that its benefits should be extended to further categories of lessees and tenants and, as I explained in reply to questions on 19th October, I then asked the Landlord and Tenant Commission to inquire and report as to whether this should be done. The commission are considering the matter at present and I shall await their report before deciding whether further legislation should be introduced.
