Vol. 230 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Swimming Pools.

7.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number and location of swimming pools to be provided in the Dublin city area in the next two years.

I am not in a position to forecast at present the number and location of swimming pools to be provided in the Dublin city area in the next two years. Last June, I informed Dublin Corporation that I would be prepared to allocate capital to enable them to commence the building of one or two pools, depending on the price, in the current year. Subsequently the Corporation decided to proceed with pools at Townsend Street and Crumlin.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that public money has been spent on the provision of swimming pools in the Dublin area which are, in fact, restricted in their use; and whether guarantees are sought in such cases to ensure that, while there are only two swimming pools for the whole of Dublin, such restrictions will not be allowed.

It is understood that Dublin Corporation's scheme for the making of contributions to bodies providing swimming pools contains conditions designed to ensure that where the contribution exceeds one-third of the cost, the pool will be available to the public or to clubs and organisations at appropriate times, subject to the payment of reasonable fees.

I understand from the Corporation that in a case where such a contribution has been made they are satisfied that the conditions are being observed.
