Vol. 231 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Strike: Losses of Farmers.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how he intends to compensate farmers who have suffered loss owing to the bacon strike.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, I announced on 8th November, the day on which work at the bacon factories was resumed, a number of price measures to assist pig producers who were affected by the recent strike in the bacon curing industry.

The Minister knows that this question was in before he published his figures in the guarantees. Is the Minister satisfied that the minimum prices he has announced for maximum weights meet the overweight pigs bound to be there as a result of no market being available? Does he think the prices are high enough for the maximum weights?

I think so. I have no evidence, as yet, to indicate I am wrong. That is not to say I might not be wrong.

The Minister has seen complaints?

I have not seen them.

There were complaints in the papers.
