Vol. 231 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Industrial Estate Projects.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if his attention has been drawn to a statement made in London by the General Manager of Córas Tráchtála to the effect that plans are in hand for nine further projects in the Shannon Industrial Estate; if he will give details of these projects; the numbers it is hoped to employ; the investment from State capital in these projects; and if he will make a general statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Shannon Free Airport Development Company that the nine firms are: Iro-Irish Ltd., International Textured Yarns Ltd., Tin-Alum Ltd., Trixon Ltd., Infotronics Ltd., Unipro Ltd., Irish University Press, Welltrade Ltd. The products or activities of the firms embrace knitting machinery, polyester yarn, fluxless solder, rehabilitation work, musical instruments, electronic equipment, fire surrounds, printing, consultancy engineering, import and export facilities.

All these firms have taken premises at Shannon and seven of them are already giving employment on a small scale. It is hoped that when they are in full operation they will employ 658 men and 196 women. The Shannon Free Airport Development Company have agreed, subject to the fulfilment of various requirements, to make available to the firms grants totalling £691,333 towards the provision of machinery costing a total of £2,021,000 and grants of £60,003 towards the cost of training workers.
