Vol. 231 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sex Discrimination in Employment.

23.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will now state with reference to a reply of 18th May, 1966, the result of the inquiries he made when Minister for Industry and Commerce about sex discrimination in employment in semi-State bodies.

I have had inquiries made regarding suggestions as to sex discrimination in employment in semi-State bodies. The position in regard to access of women to such employment is that, in general, they are eligible for appointment to recruitment grades and for promotion to higher grades. There are, however, some exceptions where recruitment grades, from which higher grades are filled by promotion, are confined to men.

As regards pay differentiation, the position of women in semi-State employment is broadly similar to that in employment generally in Ireland.

The Deputy will appreciate that semi-State bodies have a considerable degree of autonomy in determining staff recruitment policies and the remuneration and other conditions of their staff.
