Vol. 231 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - TV Reception in Connemara.

4.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the great dissatisfaction among television licence holders in Connemara regarding the quality of the picture being received on television sets in the area; and if he intends to sanction the capital expenditure required to improve this reception.

I understand that television reception is not entirely satisfactory in parts of Connemara, and that this is also the position in many other small areas, although the television network now provides coverage for about 98 per cent of the population.

As I said in reply to a Question by Deputy Barry on 22nd November about Fermoy, the improvement of television reception is a matter for Radio Telefís Éireann; the Authority has not yet completed its survey of areas of poor reception; no plans for additional transposers have yet been approved; and disproportionately heavy capital would be involved in filling in many small pockets where the signal is not satisfactory.

It will, of course, be for the Authority to decide the order in which any additional transposers for which money will be available should be provided. In this connection the Authority's plans for capital projects must be adjusted to conform with the annual limit fixed by the Government when they approve the total public capital programme.
